Tech tip

You must choose the screw length to match the thickness of the load-bearing timber, not just the overall installation height: select the length so that, after allowing for the roof battens and counter-battens, there is sufficient thread remaining inside the rafter. The required minimum screw-in depth is specified in the screw’s approval certificate – consult this before carrying out the installation. Drive the screw in at a low speed and with steady pressure, and seat the pan head only deep enough for it to lie flush: if you countersink it into the timber, you’ll lose the surface area of the head for grip.
